ALLUVIAL FAN TOUR

Extended Half Day:
Depart 6:00AM

Return 11:30AM (Approximate)

Take a Walk on the Alluvial Wild Side!

Alluvial Fans are fan-shaped sediment deposits located at a topographic break, such as a mountain front, that is made up of streamflow and/or debris flow sediments.  These areas are very unstable and can move laterally during storm events.  The fact that these areas have a high hazard classification for flooding does not deter developers from wanting to build homes in the area.  The areas where alluvial fans are found are usually very beautiful scenic area.  The question is how do developments and alluvial fans coexist?  Technically, a structural solution can be built to control the fan and convey the runoff downstream.  FEMA regulations state that to control an alluvial fan the whole active fan must be controlled.  We will visit alluvial fans and look at upper confined channels following them down through the apex and the braided system that occurs after the wash drops out all the sediment.  This will be an extended half day trip in air conditioned comfort through the desert to the Scottsdale Fans.  The early start is to avoid the heat in the afternoon since there is some walking involved. There will be very limited facilities and the field trip will require some walking.  Space is limited for this field trip so sign up early.
