1910.146 General Industry: About 1.6 million American workers enter confined space and far too many of them die every year. This OSHA standard was written to protect those workers from possible engulfment and from toxic, explosive or asphyxiating atmospheres. Focuses on areas with immediate health or safety risks - these are the permit-required confined spaces. Many workplaces contain areas that are considered to be permit-required confined spaces and the employees who deal with these spaces need additional training to work safely in them. This class is a general overview for those persons who may be dealing with permit-required confined spaces.

Topics Include:

  • Introduction and definitions
  • Ventilation and other controls and LOTO
  • Respirators, Appendix D
  • Specialty work, i.e., Hot work, LOTO
  • Rescue basics - Non-entry
  • Entry written programs/Confined Space permits
  • Responsibilities of entrant, attendant, entry supervisor and rescue personnel
  • Monitoring equipment

OSHA Standard 1926 subpart AA, Confined Spaces in Construction: This standard is similar to the general industry standard, but has more detail to the followed:

  • More communications between the host, the general contractor and the subcontractor going into the confined space
  • Requires a competent person to evaluate the confined space and evaluate the precautions
  • Requires continuous air monitoring
  • Requires monitoring for engulfment hazards
  • Requires a back-up to the rescue plan/equipment used
  • Considers pits, crawl spaces, attics and sewers as confined spaces
