2018 Trends and Updates in Sports Medicine - November 16, 2018

CME and CE Approval

Kettering Sports Medicine (BOC AP#3126) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 6 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the educational program.

Kettering Health Network is accredited by the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  The Kettering Health Network designates this live activity for a maximum of 6 hours AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.   Physicians and RNs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Applications submitted and approval pending for a maximum of 6.0 CEU for OT/OTA from the Ohio OTPTAT Board and 6.0 CEU from the Ohio PT Association. Application submitted and approval pending for a maximum of 6.0 EBP CEU for athletic trainer from the BOC. This information will be updated when it changes.

2018 Presenters:

Molly Tatum, DO

Orthopedic Surgeon, Board Certified Sports Medicine


Dr. Tatum earned her bachelor’s degree in health education and athletic training from the University of Cincinnati, went on to pursue her master’s in sports medicine at the University of Miami and then a doctorate in osteopathic medicine from Ohio University. She completed her residency in orthopedic surgery at Grandview Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio followed by a fellowship in sports medicine orthopedic surgery at MedStar Union Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Tatum previously served as a team physician for universities and professional sports teams, including the Baltimore Ravens, Washington Wizards, Morgan State University, Loyola University (MD), Towson University, U.S. Women’s Lacrosse, and Baltimore Blast (MASL). Dr. Tatum currently works as a surgeon with Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton in Ohio.


Blake Daney, MD

Orthopedic Surgeon, Fellowship trained Sports Medicine


Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Daney completed his undergraduate education at Miami University where he graduated cum laude, with a B.A. in Zoology, a minor in Molecular Biology, and a focus in Statistics. Dr. Daney continued his medical training at West Virginia University where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society as well as the Gold Humanism Honor Society. While Dr. Daney completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Cleveland Clinic Akron General he coordinated and provided physician coverage for the Akron City Series high school football games. Dr Daney completed the Steadman Philippon Research Institute Sports Medicine Fellowship in 2018. Outside of medicine he is an avid fly-fisherman and outdoorsman, and enjoys camping, hiking, kayaking, mountain-biking, and downhill skiing.


Todd Bialowas, MD

Emergency Medicine Physician, Board Certified Sports Medicine


Dr. Todd Bialowas is a residency-trained, board-certified Emergency Medicine Physician that went on to do his Fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Kettering Sports Medicine. He currently serves as a Staff Emergency Medicine Physician at the Dayton VA Medical Center, and is a Tactical Physician with the Kettering Regional SWAT Team. He has been a clinical consultant for the Army’s Tactical Human Optimization, Rapid Rehabilitation and Reconditioning (THOR3) programs, which he calls “Sports Medicine for Special Operators,” since 2014. Dr. Bialowas is also a qualified Military Flight Surgeon with mission specific Critical Care training and experience in bad places. He has planned for, and been knee deep in, several mass casualty events.


Matthew Lundin, ED.D, ATC, LAT

Athletic Training Program Director, Defiance College


Matthew Lundin has been the Program Director of the athletic training program at Defiance University since 2013. He received his Doctor of Education from Nova Southeastern University in 2014. Matthew has worked as the head athletic trainer at the secondary school and university level. He is a Certified Kinesio Taping Instructor and has taught courses ranging from Research for Athletic Training to Anatomy and Physiology in the university setting.


Connor Barnes, MS, AT, ATC

Assistant Athletic Trainer, Xavier University


Connor Barnes received his Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training from Xavier University in May 2012. He went on to complete his Masters of Science in Athletic Training with Indiana State University in May 2014. He is currently an athletic trainer with Xavier University working with the women's basketball team. He has also worked with men's soccer and baseball at Xavier University and is a preceptor for the Xavier University Athletic Training Education Program. Connor is certified in Blood Flow Restriction Rehabilitation through Owens Recovery Science.
