Understanding the biology underlying pain and addiction are critical to supporting the discovery of novel and safer treatments for both pain and addiction as well as for ensuring that patients receive the right treatment at the right time, with the right support, and without stigma. Unfortunately, our current understanding of the biology of pain and addiction is lacking. In order to further our understanding and develop innovative treatments we must support a more comprehensive understanding of the preclinical and clinical pain and addiction environments. A panel of experts working in the trenches to develop treatments for pain and addiction will discuss the science behind the next generation of treatments and what this could mean for combatting the opioid epidemic.
