Block 2 : Increasing Literacy Achievement Through Strategic Curriculum Design with an Emphasis on Popcorn Reading

jul 24, 2018: 1:15 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.

The purpose of Popcorn Reading Program is for all scholars to engage in rich and complex novels, which will improve reading levels, increase reading speed, comprehension, and reading attention span. The Popcorn Reading Program also allows teachers, scholars, and parents become ongoing reading partners bridging the gap. This school year Southern Avenue Charter Elementary School began piloting the program in September, and see dramatic improvements with majority of scholars performing well on benchmark assessments and normative assessments. The Popcorn Reading Program provides students with access to grade level novels each month in grades K-5. Every teacher prepares guided reading & writing lesson activities with scholars to enhance reading components. Every morning for the first 20 minutes, daily reading of the novel is happening with scholars. Scholars read aloud and/or independently their passage answering questions orally or written about the text. Each month scholars receive a new book, and at the end of the month they take the book home and continue building their home libraries. Parents and scholars read the book discussing key details about the novel.
