This presentation will examine student learning profiles and their literacy deficits which prevent access to curricula, resulting in profound achievement gaps which present like learning disabilities. The presentation will include a case study outlining a charter network's response to addressing students’ literacy and language development and tracking their progress and SPED exit rates longitudinally.
Attendees will develop an understanding of the role of sensory-cognitive functions in student's ability to access content material. They Will be able to recognize potential weaknesses in their own students, and have an understanding of the necessary processes student's must develop in order to be successful. Attendees will also leave with a deeper understanding of why students are in special education, and the possibilities that exist for exiting them from special education.
