Block 4 : Educators and African American Students: Teaching within the Psychology of the Black Experience

Researchers will discuss and conceptualize the need for culturally relevant pedagogy. Information in this session will be used to assist participants in increasing their cultural competence through exploratory application of historical referencing and social justice advocacy and awareness. Additionally, unique risk and protective factors are examined to cultivate academic success among African American students.

Learning Outcomes: 

The goal of the current research project is to analyze the role of culturally adapted strategies among African American male youth within the urban school context.
Objective 1: Discuss the protective and risk factors associated with academic success among African American males
Objective 2: Identify the current counseling models and training strategies aimed to address the needs of African American males in the academic setting.
Objective 3: Evaluate evidenced based counseling strategies and implications to address psycho-socio-developmental needs of African American male youth in urban schools.
